In addition to our traditional oral cancer screening Dr. Farr uses a Velscope at every new patient exam. The Velscope is a non-invasive (tissue fluorescing) and painless visualization tool which helps us with very early detection of cancer in the gums and mouth. The use of this device during surgical tumor removal has reduced the need for secondary excisional surgeries by almost 90%. The early detection of oral cancers can have a dramatic impact on life expectancy and quality of life. Historically the 5 year survival rate after detection and treatment of an intraoral cancer has been 40-50% . This discouraging mortality rate has been attributed by many doctors to the late stage of development that most oral cancers exhibit when they are detected. The investment we’ve made to integrate the Velscope into our practice is just one example of our commitment to using the latest technologies and insuring you remain in the best possible state of health
